To Prevent Crime and the Fear of Crime

Neighbourhood Watch Principle

The Neighbourhood Watch Principle is not meant to be intrusive, quite the opposite. It is meant to be reciprocal and is at its most effective when neighbours work together to protect their homes against crime

How Do Neighbourhood Watch Schemes Work?

Neighbourhood Watch Schemes can be as large or as small as you want. They can cover all the households in an estate, a village, or just half a dozen houses in a cul de sac. It depends entirely on the area and what the people living there want

What Can Neighbourhood Watch Schemes Do?

They can target crime problems and take action to prevent them. In consultation with the police they can find out from local people what crimes most concern and affect them and focus on those specific problems.

Local problems such as vandalism, graffiti and poor street lighting are well within the scope of a well organised scheme.

Who Are We?

The Association is a voluntary body whose aim is to see that Neighbourhood Watch Schemes operate in the most effective manner possible.

It is not a management body, its role is to encourage the formation of new schemes and to make existing schemes as effective as is practical both in a crime prevention role and community enrichment activities.

Message from Chief Inspector Barry Smith

Over the next three years, North Yorkshire Police will be prioritising its efforts and resources to deliver for you:

  • Safer Neighbourhoods -Creating a safer environment for every community in NorthYorkhire and the City of York.
  • Safer Roads -Reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries that cause devastation to individuals and families.
  • Stronger Partnerships -Working with other public services and organisations to tackle our community issues.
  • Safeguarding our communities from Terrorism, Domestic Extremism and Serious Crime - Bringing to justice those offenders that commit crimes which impact on our communities.

We cannot hope to be successful in any of this without the support of local community partnerships and amongst the most prominent of these in my view is the  ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ scheme. A vibrant and effective NHW scheme can contribute greatly to making people feel safe and secure in their community and really make a difference to the quality of life for all.

Through our Safer Neighbourhood Teams we have an opportunity to create, develop and strengthen relationships with our communities which are trusted, sustainable and effective in reducing the opportunity for crime and disorder and where it happens, increasing the chances of catching offenders.

We are committed to, 'Delivering Modern Policing in a Traditional way' it is my expectation therefore that as a coordinator or as a member of a watch you will know who is you local officer and how to contact him/her. You can contact any of my Safer Neighbourhood Teams via this site or through the NYP web-site.

If you want to know more about what we will achieve in 2008 -11 the North Yorkshire Policing Plan is available at either the NYP or the Police Authority sites or in your local Library.

Acting Chief Inspector David W Porter
